CJP pension jumps to Rs2.39m, Senate told

Pension for retired CJP rises over fourfold in 14 years; widows entitled to utilities, staff, fuel, and tax exemption.

The Ministry of Law and Justice on Tuesday informed the Senate that the monthly pension of a retired chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) has surged from Rs560,000 in 2010 to Rs2.39 million in 2024, alongside a range of perks for their widows.

In a written reply during the question hour, the law minister detailed the year-on-year increases, noting that pension rose steadily from Rs644,000 in 2011 to over Rs1.65 million in 2023 before jumping to the current Rs2.39 million.

The ministry said widows of former CJPs are entitled to a driver and a domestic servant, 2,000 electricity units per month, free water supply, 300 litres of petrol monthly, and exemption from income tax.

The update came months after the federal government significantly raised the salaries and allowances of superior court judges. In November, the house rent for Supreme Court judges was increased from Rs68,000 to Rs350,000, while the superior judicial allowance rose from Rs428,040 to Rs1,161,163.

Similar revisions were made for high court judges, with house rent rising from Rs65,000 to Rs350,000 and judicial allowance from Rs342,431 to Rs1,090,434.
