Arsenal Beat Man Utd 1-0 on Opening Weekend of Premier League

Calafiori punishes Bayindir error as Arteta’s men begin title bid with narrow win

Arsenal began their Premier League campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, as Riccardo Calafiori’s early goal proved decisive.

The Italian defender capitalised on a mistake from United’s stand-in goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who flapped at a Declan Rice corner in the 13th minute, allowing Calafiori to head into an empty net.

United, who invested £200 million in new attacking signings during the summer, failed to break down a disciplined Arsenal defence. Debutants Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo showed flashes of promise but could not find the target, while substitute Benjamin Sesko was unable to trouble Mikel Arteta’s side.

Patrick Dorgu struck the post with a long-range effort before half-time, while Cunha and Mbeumo forced routine saves from Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya. The Spaniard, who also diverted a powerful Cunha effort across goal, was central to preserving Arsenal’s clean sheet.

Arsenal, seeking their first league title since 2004 after finishing runners-up for three consecutive seasons, looked blunt in attack. New signing Viktor Gyokeres endured a quiet debut before being replaced by Kai Havertz just before the hour mark.

Despite United’s dominance in possession and chances created, the visitors held firm to claim a crucial three points and keep pace with title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City, who also began the season with wins.

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea were held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace after Eberechi Eze had an early goal controversially ruled out.
