Authorities on Tuesday arrested the prime suspect involved in the brutal killing of a rare leopard in Boi village, Abbottabad, and sent him to jail on judicial remand.

The leopard was reportedly tortured and killed between August 14 and 15, with its carcass later discovered near a hill in the area, officials of the Hazara Wildlife Department confirmed.

Abbottabad Sub-Divisional Forest Officer (SDFO) Muhammad Mushtaq said protecting wildlife remained the department’s top priority and warned that no one would be allowed to take the law into their own hands.

Officials added that legal action had been initiated under the Wildlife Act, while efforts were under way to trace others suspected of involvement in the incident. Authorities said they were strictly enforcing laws to prevent such cases in the future.

Fishing ban flouted at Ghazi Barrage red zone
Meanwhile, reports emerged of illegal fishing in the red zone of Ghazi Barrage despite a ban imposed after recent heavy rains and flooding.

Sources said groups of people, including children, were spotted fishing dangerously close to high-flow discharge points, in violation of restrictions. A video circulating on social media showed influential individuals fishing without hindrance, even as ordinary citizens faced strict checks at security posts where IDs and vehicles were thoroughly inspected.

Officials had earlier banned public access to Tarbela Dam and adjoining sensitive areas due to the flood situation. However, fishing at the barrage continued despite the presence of security personnel, raising questions over enforcement.

Local residents urged authorities to take immediate notice, tighten security, and enforce the ban effectively to prevent any untoward incident.
