TIANJIN: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday hailed success of China in lifting 800 million people out of poverty, calling it a model for the world and urging Pakistan to draw lessons from Beijing’s development experience.

Addressing students and faculty at Tianjin University, PM Shehbaz, who is in China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of State summit, described the achievement as “unparalleled in human history”.

“China has today become the world’s largest economy and the most powerful country,” the premier remarked, praising President Xi Jinping’s leadership and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

“Pakistan fully supports President Xi’s vision, which emphasizes the eradication of corruption and the prevention of poverty. This is also our policy,” he said.

Mr Sharif insisted that his government faced no allegations of corruption and stressed that Pakistan could achieve prosperity by adopting China’s approaches to industrial, agricultural and scientific advancement.

On bilateral ties, the prime minister reiterated that Pakistan-China friendship was anchored in “commitment and clear vision to find a shared destiny.”
