China Pledges Full Support to Pakistan in Fight Against Terrorism
TIANJIN: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday reiterated Beijing’s full support for Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts, as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif lauded China’s “unflinching support” for the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and socioeconomic development.
The two leaders met at the Great Hall of People following the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. According to China’s state news agency Xinhua, President Xi said, “China supports Pakistan’s fight against terrorism,” while expressing hope that Islamabad would take stronger measures to safeguard Chinese personnel, projects and institutions operating in the country.
Xi said China supported Pakistan in “maintaining unity, focusing on development and enhancing national strength.” He also proposed upgrading the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to “CPEC 2.0,” while describing a robust bilateral relationship as vital for regional peace and development.

Prime Minister Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to implement the next phase of CPEC, including its five new corridors, and welcomed China’s readiness to cooperate in industry, agriculture and mining. He also expressed Pakistan’s support for China’s global initiatives, including the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative and Global Civilisation Initiative.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir were also present during the talks.
Meeting with Putin
Separately, Prime Minister Shehbaz also held a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the summit.
President Putin extended condolences over the loss of lives and property caused by recent floods in Pakistan, while emphasising Moscow’s desire to strengthen ties. “Pakistan is a friend and partner of Russia in the region,” he remarked.
Shehbaz Sharif underlined Pakistan’s aspiration for peace, development and prosperity in the region, noting that Islamabad valued its partnership with Moscow.
