New Draft Law Prepared on Parrot Breeding and Trade in Punjab
The Punjab Wildlife Department has finalised a new draft law regarding the keeping, breeding, and sale of parrot, and has forwarded it to the provincial cabinet for approval.
According to the draft, several popular parrot species — including Alexandrine, Rose-ringed, Slaty-headed, and Plum-headed — will now be subject to mandatory registration.
Domestically kept parrots, as well as those bred and coloured for trade, will be included in the Second Schedule of protected species.

A registration fee of Rs1,000 has been proposed for each parrot, the Wildlife Department said. To regulate the practice more effectively, new categories for small and large breeders have also been introduced.
Under the proposed law, parrots will only be allowed to be sold to licensed dealers. The department explained that the government’s aim is to curb illegal buying and selling, while ensuring the protection and conservation of bird populations.
