CDA Reviews Plans for Shahdara, Dotara Dams to Resolve Water Shortage in Twin Cities

Chairman says projects are crucial for ensuring uninterrupted water supply in Islamabad and Rawalpindi

ISLAMABAD: A high-level meeting was held at the Capital Development Authority headquarters on Wednesday to discuss a permanent solution to water shortages in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, with a focus on the construction of Shahdara and Dotara dams.

The meeting was chaired by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa and attended by CDA board members, representatives of Wapda, Rawalpindi Development Authority, Rawalpindi Cantonment Board, Punjab Small Dams, and senior officials of Islamabad Water.

Addressing the meeting, the CDA chairman said the construction of both dams was of utmost importance to permanently resolve water scarcity in the twin cities and stressed that the projects should be completed on a priority basis.

Officials briefed the meeting that Wapda has completed the feasibility study for the Shahdara Dam, declaring the site highly suitable for construction. Consultants from NespaK have started work on the detailed design of the project. It was decided that teams from Wapda and NespaK would jointly visit the Shahdara Dam site to review geotechnical investigations and hydrological studies.

Regarding the Dotara Dam, the meeting was informed that Wapda is currently working on its feasibility study. The CDA chairman directed that the study be completed at the earliest.

Muhammad Ali Randhawa emphasized strict adherence to timelines and effective coordination among all relevant departments to ensure timely completion of both projects. He said ensuring an uninterrupted water supply in the federal capital remained one of the authority’s top priorities.
