ISLAMABAD: A high-level meeting chaired by Chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa on Tuesday reviewed water-related issues, ongoing projects and future initiatives aimed at improving water supply in the federal capital.

The meeting, held at CDA Headquarters, was attended by senior officials including board members and relevant officers, where progress on multiple water infrastructure projects was assessed and directions were issued for their timely completion.

Officials briefed the meeting on ongoing work related to the upgradation and rehabilitation of water infrastructure, including waterworks, transmission pipelines, treatment plants and pumping systems. The installation of modern monitoring mechanisms, including SCADA systems and flow meters, is also underway to improve efficiency and transparency in water distribution.

The meeting was informed about initiatives to address groundwater depletion, including the construction of around 100 rainwater recharge wells across Islamabad to raise the water table and minimise wastage. Additionally, around 20 rainwater storage tanks will be set up at various locations to conserve water resources.

Participants were told that rooftop rainwater harvesting has been made mandatory under CDA building bylaws, with the chairman directing strict enforcement of the policy across the capital.

The meeting also reviewed measures to improve water supply tanker services, with officials highlighting the introduction of a dashboard system to address complaints and ensure better service delivery to residents.

Detailed discussions were held on dam projects, where it was shared that the feasibility study for Shahdra Dam has been completed and its design phase is nearing completion. Work on the feasibility study for Dotara Dam is ongoing and is expected to be finalised by May 2026.

Progress on environmental initiatives was also reviewed, including the establishment of three sewage treatment plants along Korang Nullah on an EPC basis, with the process of hiring a design consultant currently underway.

The meeting was further informed that PC-I for 11 wetlands in Islamabad has been approved, while site selection is in progress. Work on two wetlands has already begun in collaboration with relevant organisations.

Randhawa directed authorities to adhere to clear timelines for all ongoing and planned projects, stressing the need for efficiency and accountability. He also instructed that a proper mechanism be ensured for the timely delivery of water bills to consumers on a monthly basis without delays.

The chairman said that the establishment of an autonomous Islamabad Water Agency would help provide long-term solutions to water issues and modernise the capital’s water supply system, making it more transparent and effective.
