PM Shehbaz, Army Chief reaffirm support for US-Iran peace talks

Leadership reviews mediation progress as Pakistan prepares to host key delegations in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir on Thursday reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to facilitate and provide full support for a peaceful resolution between the United States and Iran.

The understanding was reached during a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office in Islamabad, where both leaders reviewed progress on Pakistan’s mediation efforts aimed at achieving sustainable peace in the region.

According to an official statement, the leadership expressed satisfaction over the recent de-escalation and stressed the importance of maintaining the ceasefire agreed between the two sides. They appreciated the restraint shown by all parties and reiterated Pakistan’s readiness to support dialogue for a negotiated settlement.

The prime minister also welcomed the commitment of the parties involved and renewed his invitation to delegations arriving in Islamabad, assuring them of Pakistan’s full cooperation.

The meeting comes as Pakistan prepares to host US and Iranian delegations following a temporary two-week ceasefire brokered through diplomatic efforts involving Islamabad. Officials say the upcoming talks are aimed at transforming the truce into a lasting peace agreement.

Meanwhile, PM Shehbaz also held a telephone conversation with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, discussing the escalating situation in Lebanon. He condemned ongoing Israeli attacks and expressed condolences over the loss of lives.

Sharif highlighted Pakistan’s active role in regional peace initiatives, noting that the US-Iran talks were part of broader efforts to stabilise the region. The Lebanese premier appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic role and sought Islamabad’s support to help end attacks on civilians.

Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact as developments unfold, amid growing efforts to de-escalate tensions across the Middle East.
