WASHINGTON: Donald Trump has once again praised Asim Munir, calling him a “fantastic” military officer and commending his role in facilitating talks between the United States and Iran.

In an interview with the New York Post, Trump said the field marshal was doing a “great job” and indicated that the next round of negotiations with Iran could resume in Islamabad within the next two days.

Pakistan recently emerged as a key mediator in the US-Iran conflict after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif helped broker a two-week ceasefire on April 8. Following the truce, delegations from Washington and Tehran held more than 20 hours of talks in Islamabad over the weekend, although no final agreement was reached.

Trump’s latest remarks add to his earlier praise for Pakistan’s leadership. On Sunday, he commended both PM Shehbaz and Field Marshal Munir, describing them as “very extraordinary men” and acknowledging their role in hosting peace talks between the two sides.

The US president also credited Pakistan’s leadership during a previous regional crisis, saying they had thanked him for helping avert a major conflict with India.

Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to bring the US and Iran to the negotiating table for high-level face-to-face talks have drawn international recognition, with Islamabad playing a central role in attempts to de-escalate tensions.

During the recent negotiations, Field Marshal Munir remained actively engaged, welcoming delegations and maintaining close coordination with key stakeholders, including US officials.

Trump has frequently referred to Munir as his “favourite field marshal,” highlighting the rapport developed during US involvement in defusing tensions between Pakistan and India last year.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz has also praised the army chief’s efforts, stating that Field Marshal Munir played a crucial and historic role in bringing both sides to the negotiating table and helping reduce the intensity of the conflict.

Despite last weekend’s talks ending without a deal, Pakistan has reiterated its commitment to continue facilitating dialogue between Washington and Tehran in pursuit of lasting peace.
