FBI Director Kash Patel files $250 million defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic
FBI Director Kash Patel has filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic and its reporter Sarah Fitzpatrick, accusing the publication of spreading “false and fabricated” allegations about his personal conduct and professional performance.
The disputed article claimed Patel faced concerns over alleged alcohol-related behaviour, erratic conduct, and missed or delayed meetings that could impact his responsibilities at the bureau. Patel, along with US government offices, has strongly denied these allegations.
In the lawsuit filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, Kash Patel argues that the magazine ignored pre-publication rebuttals and published the story with “actual malice” — a legal threshold required in defamation cases involving public figures. He maintains the reporting was knowingly false or recklessly published without proper verification.

The Atlantic has rejected the allegations and said it stands by its reporting, adding that it will vigorously defend itself in court.
The case adds to a growing number of legal disputes in the United States involving public officials and media organisations over contested reporting and defamation claims.
