Pakistan Navy commissions first Hangor-class submarine in China
SANYA: The Pakistan Navy on Thursday commissioned its first Hangor-class submarine, PNS/M Hangor, during a ceremony held in China, marking a significant step in strengthening maritime defence capabilities.
According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), President Asif Ali Zardari attended the ceremony as chief guest, alongside senior officials from the Pakistan Navy and the Chinese PLA Navy.
Chief of the Naval Staff Naveed Ashraf was also present at the event.
President Zardari described the commissioning as a “historic milestone” in the modernisation of the Pakistan Navy, reaffirming the country’s commitment to maintaining a robust and credible defence posture.
He said Pakistan remains fully capable of defending its sovereignty, safeguarding maritime interests and securing key economic lifelines.
Speaking on the occasion, Admiral Naveed Ashraf highlighted evolving threats to global trade and energy security, particularly at critical maritime choke points, and stressed the need for technologically advanced naval platforms.

He noted that the Hangor-class submarines, equipped with advanced weapons, sensors and Air Independent Propulsion systems, will play a vital role in maintaining maritime stability and deterring potential threats.
The naval chief added that the new submarines would enhance the protection of Sea Lines of Communication across the Arabian Sea and the wider Indian Ocean region.
Recalling the legacy of the original Hangor submarine from 1971, he said PNS/M Hangor carries forward that historic tradition while strengthening modern naval capabilities.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir also congratulated the nation and the navy on the achievement.
