Pakistan Remains Key Mediator in Iran-US Talks: Iranian Envoy

ISLAMABAD: Iranian Envoy Reza Amiri Moghadam on Sunday reaffirmed that Pakistan continues to play a central mediating role in ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States, saying no decision has been made to change Islamabad’s role.

“Pakistan remains a mediator, and no decision has been made to alter this,” the envoy said, adding that meaningful progress in talks hinges on a shift in Washington’s approach.

His remarks come a day after Donald Trump expressed doubts over the viability of Tehran’s newly proposed peace plan. Iranian media outlets reported that a 14-point proposal had been conveyed to Washington through Islamabad, outlining steps to end the conflict and establish a new framework for managing the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Confirming the development, Ambassador Moghadam said Iran had formally shared its negotiation plan via Pakistan, describing Islamabad’s diplomatic efforts as “valuable” and pivotal to the current peace process.

He maintained that Tehran has been “transparent” in its demands, stressing that any forward movement depends on the United States abandoning what he termed an “aggressive posture” and respecting Iran’s rights. He also made clear that Iran would not compromise on its national interests or defence.

Negotiations between Tehran and Washington have remained stalled since the April 8 ceasefire, following inconclusive talks held in Islamabad. Pakistan had earlier helped broker the ceasefire in the six-week conflict that erupted after US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28.

The conflict has significantly disrupted global energy markets, particularly due to tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a key النفط shipping route. Iran had briefly reopened the passage for commercial traffic but shut it again, citing alleged US ceasefire violations and continued naval pressure on its ports.

The Iranian envoy said the international community was closely observing Tehran’s “clear and logical stance,” while criticising inconsistencies in US policy.

He reiterated Iran’s commitment to diplomacy, emphasising that progress requires mutual respect and a constructive approach.

Highlighting bilateral ties, Ambassador Moghadam also noted growing political and economic cooperation between Pakistan and Iran, particularly the importance of border crossings in facilitating trade and enhancing regional connectivity.
