GILGIT: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Tuesday said many of Gilgit-Baltistan’s longstanding issues had remained neglected and pledged that his party would address them if voted into power in the upcoming elections.

Addressing a public gathering in Gilgit, Bilawal said the PPP was committed to resolving major challenges facing the region, including shortcomings in infrastructure and healthcare.

He urged voters to support PPP candidates in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections scheduled for June 7, saying the party would be able to implement its development agenda only with a public mandate.

The PPP chairman announced plans to introduce a “People Housing Initiative” in Gilgit-Baltistan if his party secured victory in the polls.

He said the programme would help ordinary citizens, particularly those living in climate-vulnerable areas, build safe, resilient and secure homes.

Bilawal said the initiative was aimed at improving living conditions and supporting communities affected by environmental and climate-related challenges across the region.

Highlighting the health sector, he said Gilgit-Baltistan urgently required more hospitals and improved healthcare facilities to ensure access to affordable and quality treatment.

He said underprivileged citizens should have access to free or low-cost medical care for major illnesses and stressed that the people of the region deserved better healthcare services.

Bilawal described the residents of Gilgit-Baltistan as among the country’s most hardworking citizens and pledged that a PPP government would prioritise the expansion of health infrastructure and public welfare services in the region.

The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections are scheduled to be held on June 7, with major political parties intensifying their campaigns across the region ahead of polling day.
