New currency notes await federal approval
KARACHI: The introduction of new currency notes in Pakistan has entered its final phase, with the State Bank of Pakistan ready to proceed, subject to approval from the federal government.
Sources said the Security Printing Corporation has completed all technical preparations and developed the new currency notes featuring modern and enhanced security elements. However, the final designs have yet to receive approval from the federal cabinet, which has delayed the official launch.
Senior Manager Printing at the Security Printing Corporation Amir Shams confirmed that detailed consultations have been held with the State Bank regarding the printing process. He said once the designs are formally approved, the printing of new notes would take around two months, as modern machinery required for production is already installed.

According to Shams, the new currency may be issued either in phases or as a complete set covering all denominations, a matter still under consideration by the State Bank. He added that an official timeline for printing and circulation would be announced later.
Sources said the State Bank has shortlisted the final designs and forwarded them to the government, while the formal order to begin printing will only be issued after cabinet approval.
If cleared by the federal cabinet, the new currency notes are expected to enter circulation by the end of 2026, bringing a major change to Pakistan’s monetary system.
