DUBAI: Dubai is working to preserve its reputation as a safe global hub despite ongoing attacks by Iran, with authorities tightening controls on misinformation and influencers promoting the government’s message of stability.

For decades, the United Arab Emirates has been regarded as a secure oasis in the turbulent Middle East, often branding itself as one of the safest countries in the world with very low crime rates.

However, the image has been challenged during the ongoing conflict as Iran reportedly launched more than 1,800 missiles and drones toward the Emirates, although air defence systems intercepted the majority of the projectiles.

Reality television personality Ebraheem Alsamadi said in a video that he would remain in the UAE despite consular advice from the United States.

“This has been my home for the past 16 years and I’m not going to leave it,” he said, calling the UAE “the safest country in the world”.

Officials and influencers have also used social media to reinforce a sense of normalcy, with Dubai’s official Instagram account sharing messages emphasising that the city remains safe.

Analysts say maintaining this reputation is crucial for the UAE, where around 90% of residents are expatriates and foreign workers play a key role in sectors such as tourism, finance and services.

Geopolitical analyst Ryan Bohl said authorities were likely hoping the conflict would be short-lived so that the country would not become associated with war.

Meanwhile, authorities have stepped up action against misinformation, warning the public against spreading rumours or sharing footage of sensitive locations.

The UAE attorney general has also ordered the arrest and urgent trial of individuals accused of publishing misleading or fabricated content related to the conflict.

The government has encouraged businesses and tourist attractions to continue normal operations, with major developer Emaar urging shops and restaurants in major destinations such as Dubai Mall to remain open.

Maintaining investor confidence and tourism will be critical for Dubai, which relies heavily on services and investment rather than oil revenues.
