JD Vance rises as key Trump ally, emerging global player
ISLAMABAD: JD Vance has emerged as one of the most influential and polarising figures in American politics, combining a compelling personal story with a rapid rise to power and an expanding global role.
Born in Middletown, Ohio, Vance frequently draws on his working-class upbringing — shaped largely by his grandmother — to connect with voters and reinforce his populist image. He first gained national recognition through his memoir Hillbilly Elegy, which explored the struggles of white working-class communities and was widely seen as offering insight into the social forces behind the rise of Donald Trump.
Despite initially criticising Trump during the 2016 election, Vance later aligned himself closely with the “Make America Great Again” movement. He went on to win a Senate seat from Ohio before being elevated to the vice presidency, with backing from influential figures including tech investor Peter Thiel.
As vice president, Vance has become one of Trump’s most vocal defenders, taking firm positions on immigration, law enforcement and free speech, while helping shape the administration’s policy direction.
His growing political influence is reflected in his national outreach and fundraising role within the Republican National Committee, fuelling speculation that he could be a contender in the 2028 presidential race.
Critics have questioned his ideological shifts, pointing to his reversal on Trump and other issues, while supporters argue his evolution reflects political pragmatism and adaptability.

In recent months, Vance has also taken on a more prominent international role. He is expected to visit Islamabad for high-level talks between the United States and Iran following a Pakistan-mediated ceasefire.
His reported involvement in backchannel diplomacy between Washington and Tehran signals a significant expansion of his responsibilities beyond domestic politics. Analysts say his role reflects a broader strategy that combines public pressure with quiet negotiations — a hallmark of the current US administration’s foreign policy approach.
Vance has also been linked to other diplomatic efforts, including engagements related to Middle East tensions, further strengthening his credentials as a trusted envoy.
As he balances his role as a key Trump ally at home with an increasingly visible diplomatic presence abroad, Vance appears to be positioning himself as a central figure in shaping both the future of US politics and its global strategy.
