MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday to discuss strengthening political and economic cooperation between the two nations, the Kremlin announced.

The talks will focus on “key issues pertaining to bilateral cooperation in politics, as well as trade and economy,” according to a statement from the Kremlin press service.

The leaders will also “outline further steps aimed at strengthening ties” and exchange views on pressing international and regional matters.

This marks the second meeting between Putin and Ibrahim since September 2024, when they met at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok.

Both countries share aligned positions on multiple global issues and collaborate within multilateral forums, including ASEAN and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Malaysia also became a BRICS partner state in January 2025.

Bilateral trade between Russia and Malaysia reached approximately $2.5 billion by the end of 2024, as reported by Russian Ambassador to Malaysia Nail Latypov.

Russia primarily exports crude minerals, oil, and chemical products to Malaysia, while Malaysia supplies rubber, machinery, and agricultural goods in return.

The two nations have so far signed 20 cooperation agreements, with discussions likely to explore further economic and diplomatic collaboration during the Moscow talks.

The meeting underscores growing ties between Russia and Malaysia amid shifting geopolitical dynamics, with both leaders expected to address shared concerns on regional stability and global economic trends.
