Russia offers discounted oil to Pakistan amid global energy crisis
ISLAMABAD: Russia’s Ambassador to Pakistan Albert Khorev on Tuesday said Moscow is ready to supply discounted oil to Pakistan, urging Islamabad to take advantage of the opportunity.
Addressing a press conference in the federal capital, the envoy said Russia would be willing to sell oil at reduced rates if Pakistan formally approaches it, adding that no official contact has yet been made in this regard.
He stressed that the energy sector remains the most significant pillar of bilateral cooperation between the two countries, noting that progress would depend on Pakistan initiating engagement.
Pakistan, like many countries, is facing rising fuel costs amid disruptions in global supply chains caused by ongoing hostilities in the Middle East.
Shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz — a vital global oil transit route — has been severely affected after Iran blocked the passage following joint strikes by the United States and Israel.
Amid the crisis, Pakistan has increased petrol and diesel prices by around 20%, with federal ministers maintaining that the hike is temporary and will be reversed once the situation improves.
The Russian ambassador said Iran’s actions in the region were aimed at US military installations in Gulf waters but refrained from further comment due to the uncertain situation.

He remarked that the world was taken aback by military actions ordered by former US president Donald Trump, describing the evolving scenario as “complex and unpredictable,” with no clear timeline for resolution.
Khorev also condemned an attack on a girls’ school in Iran that reportedly killed 170 children, calling it “highly deplorable” and urging all sides to exercise restraint.
He called on all parties to avoid the use of force and resolve disputes through political and diplomatic channels in line with the United Nations Charter.
The envoy further criticised the actions of the United States and Israel, stating that their use of force against Iran had escalated the crisis, weakened regional stability, and contributed to divisions within the Muslim world.
