Trump Calls Field Marshal Asim Munir’s Praise an ‘Honour’

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he considered the praise extended to him by Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir as an “honour”.

Speaking to American military leaders, Trump said the Pakistani army chief had acknowledged his role in preventing a potential war between Pakistan and India — a move that, according to Munir, saved millions of lives.

“He said if the war had taken place, it would have been much worse,” Trump remarked, adding that Munir’s words had left a strong impression on him. “I really liked his comment,” he said.

Trump added that COAS Munir had made the remarks in the presence of other senior officials, including two generals, which he said further amplified their significance.

The US president and the Pakistani army chief have met twice in recent months. Their first meeting took place in July over lunch at the White House Cabinet Room, where Munir reportedly praised Trump’s statesmanship and understanding of complex global issues.

A second interaction occurred earlier this month during a meeting between Trump, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Field Marshal Munir at the White House.

During that meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed his “deep admiration” for President Trump, calling him a “man of peace” committed to resolving global conflicts. He credited Trump’s “bold and decisive actions” with helping secure a ceasefire between Pakistan and India, averting what he described as a potential “major catastrophe” in South Asia.
