Two killed, eight critical in shooting at Brown University
PROVIDENCE: A shooting at Brown University in the US state of Rhode Island has left two people dead and at least eight others in critical condition, prompting a massive law enforcement response and a campus-wide lockdown.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed the deaths, while local authorities said the injured are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals and remain in critical but stable condition.
Police said the suspect has not yet been apprehended and remains at large. The shooter has been described as a male dressed in black. More than 400 officers, along with FBI agents, are searching the university campus and surrounding areas.

Brown University issued a shelter-in-place order for the campus and nearby neighbourhoods following the incident, which occurred on Sunday, December 14, 2025. Authorities said there is no immediate threat beyond the campus perimeter but urged the public to remain cautious.
Emergency services locked down the campus as police escorted students and staff to safety. Officials said surveillance footage of the suspect is expected to be released to assist in the search.
The university has not yet disclosed the identities of the victims but said support services are being provided to those affected. Investigators said further updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
