UAE Unveils AED 2bn Fund to Support Citizens Affected by Floods
In response to the devastating floods that hit the UAE last week, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has announced a AED 2 billion fund to aid citizens in repairing their damaged homes.
Extensive Damage and Widespread Disruption
The recent rains, described as unprecedented by Sheikh Mohammed, caused widespread flooding in numerous communities and homes, resulting in:
- Over 200,000 distress calls to control rooms
- Flight cancellations
- Disruptions to public transportation services
- Motorists stranded on waterlogged roads
Record-Breaking Rainfall
The UAE experienced a year’s worth of rainfall in a single day, with:
- 6.04 billion cubic meters of rainwater recorded within 24 hours
- Annual average of 6.7 billion cubic meters
Response and Relief Efforts
- Over 17,000 security and emergency services personnel mobilized
- Thousands of volunteers joined the efforts
- Tragically, at least four individuals lost their lives in the floods

“We are a country that learns from every experience and develops itself,” said Sheikh Mohammed. “Our dams are full, our valleys flowed, and our groundwater reserves swelled.
We learned lessons in dealing with severe rains and bolstered our readiness to be better prepared for the future.”
