James Gunn Clarifies ‘Man of Tomorrow’ Not a Superman Sequel
LOS ANGELES: DC Studios co-head James Gunn has clarified that Man of Tomorrow, the upcoming Superman film starring David Corenswet, is not a direct sequel to last year’s Superman, despite speculation among fans and industry watchers.
The filmmaker’s remarks came in response to a fan query on social media. Asked whether the new title was “actually Superman 2” or the same project previously teased, Gunn replied: “Yes, yes, sorry. This is the same movie. Superman has a major role. It’s not ‘Superman 2.’”
The clarification echoed comments Gunn made earlier to Entertainment Weekly, where he described the project as involving Superman in a significant way but stopped short of calling it a conventional sequel. “What I’m working on is in some way… I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily,” he said.

Man of Tomorrow, slated for release on July 9, 2027, will see Corenswet reprise the role of Clark Kent following the success of Superman, which grossed over $600 million globally and marked a strong box office showing for the rebooted DC franchise.
Industry analysts suggest that by distancing the film from the label of a traditional sequel, Gunn may be signalling a broader narrative approach as DC reshapes its cinematic universe.
