Horror thriller Weapons continued its strong run at the North American box office, taking in $25 million over the weekend to retain the top spot, industry tracker Exhibitor Relations reported on Sunday.

The Warner Bros release, starring Julia Garner of Ozark fame and Josh Brolin, tells the story of the mysterious disappearance of a group of schoolchildren. Analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research described its second-week performance as “strong,” particularly given a quieter summer weekend at US and Canadian cinemas.

Disney’s Freakier Friday, the long-awaited sequel to the 2003 hit starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, held on to second place with $14.5m.

Debuting in third was Universal’s action sequel Nobody 2, led by Bob Odenkirk of Better Call Saul, which collected $9.3m. “Critics like this story about a workaholic assassin trying to take a vacation with his family while getting caught up in trouble,” said Gross, noting positive reviews and audience response.

Disney’s superhero reboot The Fantastic Four: First Steps fell to fourth with $8.8m, while Universal’s animated sequel The Bad Guys 2 slipped to fifth, grossing $7.5m.

Rounding out the top 10 were:

  • Superman ($5.3m)
  • The Naked Gun ($4.8m)
  • Jurassic World: Rebirth ($2.9m)
  • F1: The Movie ($2.7m)
  • Coolie ($2.4m)
