RAWALPINDI: Adiala jail authorities on Wednesday submitted a detailed medical report of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan to an anti-terrorism court, outlining his health complaints and treatment during detention.

The 72-year-old leader, incarcerated since August 2023, has at various times complained of shoulder pain, ear and dental infections, and vertigo (dizziness). The report states that all issues were treated promptly by jail doctors and visiting specialists.

Ear pain, tinnitus, and vertigo

According to the report, Imran Khan repeatedly complained of ear pain and hearing loss, particularly in his left ear.

  • On May 18, 2024, an ENT specialist from Benazir Bhutto Hospital, Rawalpindi, diagnosed tinnitus (ringing/buzzing sounds) and recommended ear cleaning, which was carried out.
  • On May 23, 2024, the hospital’s ENT head reconfirmed the tinnitus, while subsequent tests indicated hearing loss caused by inner ear nerve weakness.
  • In January 2024, another consultant found Khan’s ear membrane “hyper-echoic,” linking tinnitus to vertigo spells.
  • In April 2024, tests by Dr. Asim Younus at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital showed slightly elevated cholesterol but otherwise normal results.

A medical board from PIMS, headed by ENT specialist Dr. Altaf Hussain, conducted multiple tests — including blood CP, lipid profile, and liver/kidney functions — all of which returned normal, despite the persistence of tinnitus and dizziness.

By March 2025, a fresh medical board confirmed that Khan’s ear-related complaints persisted but concluded that overall, he remained in good health.

Political and family concerns

Khan’s family and PTI leaders have frequently raised concerns about his well-being and alleged lack of adequate facilities in prison. His sister, Aleema Khan, had petitioned the court earlier this year, prompting the submission of this report.

While supporters fear his health is deteriorating, the medical findings suggest only minor ailments, with vertigo episodes described as brief and manageable.
