ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) on Monday decided to launch a comprehensive cleanliness campaign in the federal capital, with Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa directing officials to introduce a high-standard sanitation system across Islamabad.

The decision was taken during a meeting held at CDA Headquarters under the chairmanship of Randhawa, who also serves as Chief Commissioner Islamabad. The session was attended by senior officials, including CDA Board Member Administration Talat Mehmood, Director General Building Control and Housing, Director General Environment, Director Solid Waste Management and the Chief Officer of the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI).

During the meeting, a detailed discussion was held on devising a comprehensive strategy for ensuring high-standard cleanliness arrangements in the city.

Randhawa said an effective and integrated cleanliness system should be introduced for the immediate resolution of sanitation-related issues, announcing that a special drive would be launched throughout Islamabad.

The meeting decided to immediately fulfil the requirement for new machinery and additional manpower to improve both primary and secondary waste collection systems across the city.

The chairman emphasised the need for modern equipment, improved planning and enhanced human resources to address sanitation challenges effectively.

Officials informed the meeting that the number of waste containers in both urban and rural areas would be increased. Damaged waste containers installed across the city would be repaired, while the number of waste trolleys would also be enhanced. Dustbins will be installed at various locations to facilitate proper waste disposal.

Randhawa directed authorities to implement a three-bin system in commercial markazs to ensure proper segregation and recycling of waste. He said local traders should be actively involved in the cleanliness campaign in commercial centres and trade hubs.

He further ordered the formation of mohallah committees comprising local residents to help improve the sanitation system at the neighbourhood level. Strict action, including challans and fines, will be imposed on those found littering in commercial areas.

The chairman also directed the Islamabad Food Authority to take action against restaurants responsible for improper waste disposal.

He instructed officials to establish a 24/7 control room to monitor sanitation operations and ensure swift response to complaints. Helpline numbers will be displayed on digital screens across the city to enhance public awareness.

The meeting was informed that wireless sets and new uniforms were being provided to field staff to improve operational efficiency. Authorities also briefed that the process of licensing and registration of scavengers would be initiated in various areas.

Randhawa expressed confidence that these measures would significantly improve the solid waste management system in Islamabad and ensure a cleaner environment for residents, adding that all available resources would be utilised to make the federal capital a model clean city.
