ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) Environment Wing officially launched the Spring Tree Plantation Campaign 2026 on Wednesday to further beautify and enhance the greenery of Islamabad. Chairman CDA and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa, inaugurated the campaign by planting a tree at the Tayyip Erdogan Interchange, F-8. The event was attended by Member Administration Talat Mahmood, Member Environment Esfandyar Baloch, DG Environment, and a large number of schoolchildren.

Chairman Randhawa said the Plantation Campaign will ensure full participation from civil society, media, educational institutions, the private sector, and the general public. He emphasized that, in line with directives from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, the campaign aims to plant a maximum number of environmentally friendly trees this year, setting a target of 1 million trees across the Capital.

Highlighting the importance of tree care, Randhawa said the campaign will use advanced technologies, including satellite imagery from SUPARCO, to monitor planted trees. Each tree will be assigned a QR code, providing details such as age, growth, and other relevant data. Initially, QR codes will be installed on trees along Islamabad’s main highways, with older trees also being linked to the system.

The chairman noted that environmental specialist Rizwan Mehboob has been invited to guide this year’s plantation drive. Indigenous, fruit-bearing, and shade-providing trees will be planted under the campaign. He urged citizens to actively participate to make the initiative successful and emphasized that increasing Islamabad’s green cover is a shared responsibility of both authorities and the public.

Additionally, stalls will be set up at various locations across the city to distribute environmentally friendly plants. Chairman Randhawa called on citizens to report any illegal tree cutting through the official helpline. He concluded by stating that the campaign aims to make Islamabad greener and maintain its status as one of the world’s most beautiful capitals.
