ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has postponed by-elections on five National Assembly and four Punjab Assembly seats owing to the severe flood situation across the province.

According to a notification, polling has been put off in NA-66 (Wazirabad), NA-96 and NA-140 (Faisalabad), NA-129 (Lahore) and NA-143 (Sahiwal). The provincial assembly constituencies affected include PP-73 (Sargodha), PP-87 (Mianwali), PP-98 (Faisalabad) and PP-203 (Sahiwal).

The ECP said the devastating floods had crippled Punjab’s communication network and damaged public infrastructure, including school buildings designated as polling stations. It added that civil administration, law enforcement and rescue agencies in the affected districts were engaged in relief operations, while much of the election staff was also occupied with emergency duties.

In light of these circumstances, the commission concluded that holding the by-elections was not possible at present.
