Federal Govt Forms Commission for Protection of Journalists

Body will responsible for monitoring the rights, welfare, and security of journalists

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has established the Commission for the Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals, aimed at safeguarding the rights and security of media workers across the country.

The commission has been formed under the Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals Act, 2021, and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has formally issued the notification announcing its creation.

According to the notification, the commission will comprise 12 members. The Principal Information Officer of the Ministry of Information will serve as an ex-officio member, while the Director General of the Ministry of Human Rights has also been nominated.

Other members include Secretary PRA Naveed Akbar, Ghulam Nabi Yousafzai, and representatives from national and provincial press unions. Representation from major journalist bodies, including the National Press Club and various factions of the PFUJ, has also been ensured.

The commission’s members include Hassan Abbas, Tahir Hassan Khan, Tamsila Chishti, Nadia Saboohi, and Khalil Ahmed.

The body will be responsible for monitoring the rights, welfare, and security of journalists and evaluating measures to ensure their protection. The commission is expected to assume its responsibilities soon.
