ISLAMABAD: Chairman Senate Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday met Senator Vicente Azpitarte Pérez, member of the Spanish Senate, and discussed measures to strengthen bilateral parliamentary relations, expand trade and cultural cooperation, and extend mutual support at the global level.

Chairman Gilani said Pakistan attaches great importance to its relations with Spain, particularly within the broader framework of the European Union, and expressed gratitude for Madrid’s support to Islamabad at international forums.

He also praised Spain’s stance on Palestine, terming it a historic step towards global peace and justice. On the Kashmir issue, he reiterated Pakistan’s position that the dispute must be resolved in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions, warning that India’s unilateral actions posed serious threats to regional peace and stability.

Climate change, security among priority areas

The Senate chairman highlighted climate change, security, and energy as key sectors where cooperation with Spain could be enhanced. He noted that despite strained relations with India, Pakistan had demonstrated responsibility by presenting its case effectively at the international level — an approach that had been acknowledged globally.

Gilani also invited the Spanish side to attend the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference scheduled for November 2025 in Islamabad, describing the forum as an avenue for promoting parliamentary cooperation and exchanging experiences.

Both sides agreed to expedite the exchange of parliamentary delegations and revive historical and cultural linkages.
