ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Thursday met US Ambassador Natalie Baker to discuss the evolving situation in the Middle East and preparations for upcoming peace talks between the United States and Iran.

The meeting focused on arrangements for the high-level negotiations scheduled to begin in Islamabad, following a temporary ceasefire brokered through Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts.

During the discussion, the US envoy appreciated Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue, describing it as “sincere” and significant amid recent regional tensions. Naqvi informed the ambassador that comprehensive security measures had been finalised to ensure the safety of all visiting delegations.

He said US Vice President JD Vance, along with officials including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, would be among the special guests attending the talks.

Authorities have implemented extraordinary security and traffic arrangements across the capital ahead of the delegations’ arrival. The Islamabad Traffic Police announced road closures and diversions on key routes, including the Expressway from Zero Point to Korral Chowk, while heavy traffic has been temporarily banned from entering the city.

Commuters have been advised to use alternative routes such as the Taxila Motorway, Chakri, and Rawat to avoid congestion, while traffic from major avenues has been redirected to ease movement during official convoys.

In addition, examinations at government schools located near the Red Zone have been postponed as part of security measures. Officials said police personnel have been deployed across the city to guide commuters and ensure smooth traffic flow.

The developments come as Pakistan prepares to host crucial negotiations aimed at transforming the recent ceasefire into a lasting peace agreement, with Islamabad playing a central role in diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran.
