MQM-P leader demands restoration of Kamran Tessori as Sindh governor
KARACHI: A senior leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has called for the reinstatement of Kamran Tessori as the Sindh governor following his recent removal from office.
In a statement, MQM-P Senior Deputy Convener Farooq Sattar urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to reconsider the decision. “Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif should review his decision to remove Kamran Tessori and reinstate him,” he said.
Tessori, affiliated with MQM-P, was removed last week, with the federal government appointing Nehal Hashmi, a senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), as his successor.
Following the development, MQM-P expressed reservations, stating that the party had not been taken into confidence by the federal government regarding the decision, despite being a coalition partner at the Centre.
Tessori had assumed the office of Sindh governor in October 2022 after the departure of Imran Ismail.
After taking oath, Hashmi said that MQM-P remains an ally of the PML-N and that the change in governorship would not affect the coalition arrangement.

Born in Karachi on January 28, 1960, Hashmi is a seasoned lawyer and politician. He began his legal career in the late 1980s and founded the All Pakistan Youth League during his student years. He joined the PML-N in 1992 and served as adviser on law, justice and human rights to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif from 1997 to 1999.
He has also held key party positions, including president of PML-N Karachi and general secretary in Sindh. Hashmi was elected to the Senate in 2015 and served until 2018.
In 2017, he was expelled from the party over a controversial statement related to the Panama Papers case, though his membership was later restored in 2021. He was also sentenced in a contempt of court case in 2018, resulting in disqualification, but was released after completing his sentence.
