Over 21,600 Pakistanis Imprisoned Abroad, NA Told

Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar reveals Saudi Arabia, UAE, and India top the list as thousands face charges ranging from immigration violations to serious crimes.

ISLAMABAD: More than 21,600 Pakistanis are currently imprisoned across jails worldwide, according to a written response submitted to the National Assembly by Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

The minister disclosed that 21,647 Pakistanis are incarcerated abroad on charges that range from immigration violations to major criminal offences.

Dar revealed that India is holding 738 Pakistani nationals, but has provided no information on the allegations or charges against them.

Saudi Arabia tops the list with 10,745 Pakistanis detained for various offences. Many have been convicted, while others are still undergoing trial.

In the United Arab Emirates, 5,297 Pakistanis are currently in detention, though authorities have not shared details about the specific accusations.

China is holding 652 Pakistani citizens, with most cases linked to drug trafficking, counterfeit currency, fraud, and illegal immigration.

Other countries detaining Pakistani nationals include:

  • Qatar: 599
  • Oman: 578
  • Malaysia: 444
  • Italy: 353
  • Bahrain: 218
  • Türkiye: 190
  • United States: 141
  • Afghanistan: 91

The disclosure highlights the scale of legal and immigration challenges faced by Pakistani citizens abroad, prompting renewed debate on consular assistance and overseas protections.
