Pakistan, Romania vow to strengthen ties across sectors

Gilani, Romanian envoy discuss trade, education and parliamentary cooperation

ISLAMABAD: Yousuf Raza Gilani on Friday held a meeting with Dan Stoenescu in Islamabad, where both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations across multiple sectors.

During the meeting, the Senate chairman welcomed the ambassador and appreciated the Romanian Madrigal–Marin Constantin Choir’s interpretation of Pakistan’s national anthem, calling it a significant cultural gesture that reflects growing people-to-people connections between the two countries.

Gilani also conveyed his good wishes for the success of Romania’s new government formed after the May 2025 presidential elections, describing Romania as an important partner in Eastern Europe and the Black Sea region.

Highlighting the longstanding relations between the two countries, he said existing agreements and memoranda of understanding provide a strong foundation for expanding cooperation in political, economic and defence fields. He also acknowledged Romania’s positive role regarding matters of Pakistan’s interest at the European Union level.

Emphasising political engagement, Gilani called for enhanced interaction between the leadership of both countries and stressed the importance of parliamentary diplomacy. He welcomed the establishment of parliamentary friendship groups in Pakistan and proposed closer coordination with their Romanian counterparts.

The Senate chairman reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to peace, stating that dialogue and negotiations remain the most effective means to resolve conflicts. He said Pakistan seeks stability not only in the region but globally.

He also highlighted the Afghan refugee issue, noting that Pakistan has hosted over 3.5 million refugees for decades and urged the international community to support a sustainable and dignified solution.

Gilani further said Pakistan is keen to expand trade and investment ties with Romania and called for increased engagement between business communities through trade fairs and exhibitions.

In addition, he appreciated Romania’s facilitation in providing employment opportunities to Pakistani workers and expressed interest in exporting more skilled labour through legal channels, while also emphasising the need to strengthen academic collaboration between universities of both countries.

Ambassador Stoenescu appreciated Pakistan’s role in promoting regional peace and supported its diplomatic stance on key issues.

The meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to deepen cooperation through sustained dialogue and increased people-to-people contact.
