ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced the formation of an “Imran Khan Release Force” aimed at securing the release of its founder and former prime minister Imran Khan from jail.

The 73-year-old cricketer-turned-politician has remained incarcerated since August 2023, facing convictions in multiple cases which he claims were politically motivated following his removal from office through a no-confidence vote in 2022.

The party’s renewed push comes after a medical report submitted to the Supreme Court revealed that Imran has only 15% vision remaining in his right eye. The government, however, insists that the former premier is receiving the best possible treatment in custody.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi recently stated that PTI leaders and Imran’s personal doctors had expressed satisfaction with the treatment process, while accusing Imran’s sister Aleema Khan of politicising the matter.

Speaking at a press conference outside the Supreme Court, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said he had been tasked by the jailed PTI founder to lead a “street movement” for his release.

Afridi alleged that court orders were being ignored and claimed that Imran was still being denied access to his personal doctors.

Announcing the “Imran Khan Release Force,” the chief minister said the group would be formally registered and would pursue a peaceful struggle. He added that members would take an oath in Peshawar immediately after Eid ul Fitr.

Afridi said the force would operate under a clear chain of command, with Imran Khan deciding key leadership responsibilities. Preparations would be completed before any formal movement is launched.

He said the campaign would focus on the supremacy of the Constitution, democracy, and ensuring an independent media in the country.
