Punjab Citizens to Face Heavy Fines Under New Traffic Ordinance

Stricter penalties introduced for overspeeding, underage driving, smoke-emitting vehicles, and traffic violations

LAHORE: The Punjab government has issued a new traffic ordinance imposing heavy fines and stricter penalties for motorists and motorcyclists across the province.

Signed by Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider, the traffic ordinance introduces fines of up to Rs100,000 for driving without a fitness certificate and imprisonment for up to six months for using non-standard window glass. Violating one-way traffic rules may result in six months’ imprisonment or fines up to Rs50,000.

Seat belts for front-seat passengers are now mandatory, and penalties for underage driving have been doubled, with parents also held accountable. Smoke-emitting vehicles face fines ranging from Rs2,000 for motorcycles to Rs15,000 for public transport.

Overspeeding fines have increased by up to 300%, and overloading penalties now range from Rs3,000 to Rs15,000 depending on vehicle type. Traffic signal violations and illegal number plates will also attract strict penalties.

The province’s challan system has been fully digitised to ensure efficient and transparent enforcement of these new regulations.
