KARACHI: The United Kingdom has announced more than Rs450 million in aid to help Sindh prepare for potential flooding, with funding aimed at strengthening early warning systems, evacuation measures and the provision of emergency supplies. According to the British High Commission, the assistance will be delivered through non-governmental organisations to provide immediate support to vulnerable households before disaster strikes.

The High Commission noted that with the latest pledge, Britain’s total humanitarian assistance to Pakistan has crossed Rs950m, benefitting more than 400,000 people with life-saving support so far. British High Commissioner Jane Marriott said Sindh was at a critical stage of flood preparedness and required urgent assistance to safeguard lives and avert large-scale devastation.

The High Commission further said that the UK continues to back Pakistan’s “Start Ready Disaster Risk Financing” system, under which more than Rs180m has already been released. The programme has so far reached 20,000 people across Punjab, Sindh and KP.
