Over half a million arms licenses were issued, but a staggering 121,000 of these licenses were illegal, according to a report issued by Pakistan Ministry of Interior.

The shocking revelation has emerged from an investigation into arms licenses issued during the tenure of the past four governments.

The Supreme Court’s intervention triggered an urgent investigation, exposing various loopholes and preferential treatment in the issuance process.

Key Findings:

  • Over 100,000 submachine gun licenses were granted, indicating a significant oversight in regulatory procedures.
  • 70,000 licenses were issued during the PTI government’s tenure, while 40,000 were issued during the PDM government’s tenure.
  • 21,000 fake licenses were uncovered, casting doubts on the integrity of the entire licensing system.
  • Licenses were granted to prominent political figures, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Jahangir Khan Tareen, Nawaz Sharif, and Faryal Talpur.
  • Licenses were issued on the directives of federal ministers and senators, raising questions about preferential treatment and undue influence.
  • A revenue stream exceeding Rs1 billion was generated from firearms license fees.

Interior Ministry’s Response:

The Interior Ministry has initiated a comprehensive review of all issued firearms licenses.

A spokesperson has assured the public of a thorough investigation, with the report set to be submitted to the Supreme Court in due course.
