Pakistan is celebrating a moment of national pride as Dr. Shahzad Baig, a Pakistani physician, has been named one of TIME magazine’s 100 global healthcare leaders, known as ‘TIME100 HEALTH’.

Dr. Baig, serving as the national coordinator of the Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme, has been recognized for his tireless efforts in leading the country’s battle against polio.

Dr. Baig’s contributions to polio eradication initiatives are impressive. Before assuming his role in Pakistan, he played a significant role in Nigeria’s successful polio eradication programme, which led to the country being declared polio-free in 2020.

Time magazine predicts that under his guidance, Pakistan will achieve a similar milestone in the near future.

Jeffrey Kluger, a renowned editor at large of Time magazine, highlighted Dr. Baig’s achievements, including the dramatic reduction in polio cases since his appointment, from 147 in 2019 to only six in 2023.

Dr. Baig’s leadership has resulted in the inoculation of over 90 million children in a single year, with millions more to be vaccinated in an upcoming campaign.
