PML-N Nominates Shehbaz Sharif as Acting President

In a significant development within the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been nominated as the party’s acting president by the Central Working Committee (CWC) on Saturday, marking a pivotal moment in the party’s leadership dynamics.

However, just days after his nomination, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif tendered his resignation from the position of PML-N president on Monday, triggering a process for the election of new leadership within the party.

In response to Shehbaz’s resignation, PML-N has announced plans to convene a meeting of the party’s general council on May 28 in Lahore, where members will gather to elect a new president to lead the party forward.

Amidst these developments, Rana Sanaullah, in a recent press conference, revealed that the PML-N Punjab chapter has requested Nawaz Sharif to consider resuming the party presidency, highlighting his leadership as vital for the party’s success.

Nawaz Sharif, the former prime minister, was disqualified from holding any public position after being convicted in 2018.

However, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) acquitted him in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia references in November and December last year, respectively. Following his acquittal, Nawaz Sharif contested the General Elections 2024 and emerged victorious from NA-130 Lahore.

The latest developments unfolded during a party meeting held in Model Town, Lahore, attended by several PML-N leaders, including Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Khawaja Saad Rafique, and others.

During the meeting, presided over by PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal, Shehbaz Sharif’s resignation as party president was accepted, paving the way for a new chapter in PML-N’s leadership journey.

As the party gears up for a leadership transition, all eyes are on the upcoming general council meeting, which will shape the future trajectory of PML-N’s political landscape.
