Pakistan cricket captain Babar Azam has defended the inclusion of out-of-form bowler Hasan Ali in the 18-member squad, ahead of the team’s upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England.

In a pre-departure press briefing, Babar has found himself at the center of a selection controversy while explaining the exclusion of death-bowling specialist Zaman Khan.

Babar stated that Zaman Khan is a new ball bowler, and the team already has enough options in that department, whereas Hasan Ali’s experience was a key factor in his selection.

However, Babar’s comments have raised eyebrows, as Zaman is widely regarded as a death bowler, not a new ball bowler.

Former players and fans have expressed surprise and disappointment at Zaman’s exclusion, given his impressive performances in domestic cricket.

Meanwhile, Hasan Ali’s selection has been met with criticism, given his recent poor form.

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi expressed surprise over Hasan Ali’s selection, citing a perceived lack of recent standout performances.

“While I understand the need for an experienced backup bowler, Hasan’s selection has raised eyebrows considering his recent performance levels,” Afridi remarked, hinting at potential alternatives for consideration.

Pakistani batter Ahmed Shahzad also voiced skepticism, suggesting that personal relationships might have played a role in Hasan’s inclusion rather than purely performance-based considerations.

In a candid interview with a local channel, Shahzad hinted at the influence of personal connections, citing Azhar Mahmood’s close rapport with Hasan Ali as a potential factor.
