“No India-Pakistan Clash for 2025 Champions Trophy”Minister
India Minister of Sports, Anurag Thakur, has reiterated India’s stance on not sending the national cricket team to Pakistan for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
In a recent media briefing, Minister Thakur made it abundantly clear that India stands firm on its decision, citing concerns over Pakistan’s alleged support for terrorism in the South Asian region.
During his tenure at the helm of the BCCI, Thakur emphasized the incongruity of promoting cricket while acts of terrorism persisted.
He stressed the need for Pakistan to address these issues before expecting sporting engagements with India.
Thakur underscored that the Indian cricket team should not be dispatched to Pakistan under any circumstances.
Instead, he advocated for the BCCI to explore alternative hosting arrangements with the ICC, echoing previous calls for a hybrid hosting model.
The Minister’s remarks come in the wake of last year’s Asia Cup, where India’s refusal to play in Pakistan led to the tournament being co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
The logistical challenges resulting from India’s decision, including frequent travel for Pakistan’s team between their home country and Sri Lanka, raised concerns about player fatigue.
With India also gearing up for general elections this year, political rhetoric against Pakistan is anticipated.
However, such political stances risk impeding sports diplomacy and could ultimately hinder the growth and spirit of the game.
