Pakistan qualify for FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 after thrilling win over Japan
SUEZ: Pakistan men’s national field hockey team qualified for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 after defeating Japan men’s national field hockey team 4-3 in the semi-final of the qualifiers at the Suez Canal Authority Hockey Stadium on Friday.
The former world champions secured their place in the global tournament for the first time since 2022 after producing a remarkable comeback victory.
Pakistan made a strong start to the match as captain Ammad Butt opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a superb field goal to give his side an early advantage.
The lead remained intact until the second quarter when Ryoma Ooka equalised for Japan in the 21st minute with a field goal.
Japan then took control of the contest during the third quarter, with Shota Yamada and Koji Yamasaki scoring in quick succession to push their side ahead 3-1.

However, Pakistan produced a sensational comeback in the final quarter. Abu Mahmood reduced the deficit in the 52nd minute before Sufyan Khan levelled the score in the 55th minute.
Just two minutes later, Afraz scored the decisive goal in the 57th minute to restore Pakistan’s lead.
Both teams pressed hard in the closing minutes, but Pakistan’s defence held firm to secure the victory.
The win marked Pakistan’s fourth consecutive triumph in the ongoing qualifiers as the Green Shirts remained unbeaten throughout the group stage.
Pakistan began their campaign with a narrow 5-4 win against China men’s national field hockey team, powered by a brace from Rana Waheed.
They then defeated Malaysia men’s national field hockey team 5-3 before completing the group stage with a 4-2 victory over Austria men’s national field hockey team, where Abu Mahmood scored twice.
Pakistan will now face England men’s national field hockey team in the FIH final of the qualifying event, scheduled to be played at the same venue on Saturday.
