Spanish football federation (RFEF) on Monday proposed shifting the upcoming La Liga fixture between Barcelona and Villarreal to Miami, marking a potential first for Europe’s top domestic leagues.

The match, scheduled for Saturday, December 20 — the final round before the league’s winter break — is awaiting clearance from UEFA and FIFA.

The RFEF has formally submitted the request to stage the game at Hard Rock Stadium in Florida.

While Spanish Super Cup fixtures have previously been hosted abroad, including in Saudi Arabia, this would be the first competitive La Liga game to take place outside Spain.

Rashford close to Barca move

Meanwhile, England international Marcus Rashford is reportedly on the verge of joining Barcelona from Manchester United on a season-long loan, with an option to buy.

The 27-year-old forward, out of favour under new United manager Ruben Amorim, has not featured for the club since December 12 and spent part of last season on loan at Aston Villa.

Reports from Britain’s Press Association suggest Barcelona have long been Rashford’s preferred destination.

He is among five players seeking an exit from Old Trafford after a decade with the club, during which he scored 138 goals in 426 appearances.
