Chinese commercial space company CAS Space has announced plans to launch a “space tourism vehicle” by 2027, with the goal of reaching the edge of space by 2028, as reported by Reuters.

This announcement comes in the wake of recent strides in the space tourism sector, notably with Blue Origin, backed by Jeff Bezos, resuming crewed operations using its New Shepard rocket to conduct short-duration space missions with cargo and passengers.

According to CAS Space, the space tourism vehicle will feature a tourist cabin capable of accommodating seven individuals per flight, equipped with four panoramic windows to offer breathtaking views of space.

The company aims to have ten spacecraft ready to shuttle visitors to the edge of space every 100 hours, with launches slated to occur from a newly constructed aerospace theme park.

Official media reports indicate that tickets for each space tourism trip will be priced between 2 million and 3 million yuan ($415,127) per person, reflecting the high demand and exclusivity of such experiences.

CAS Space, established in 2018 and based in Guangzhou, is backed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the country’s largest governmental research organization, as its second-largest shareholder.

China’s space exploration program has recently made significant strides, including the successful launch of the Chang’e-6 mission earlier this month, which aims to return samples from the moon’s far side.

This progress has positioned China’s space industry as a formidable contender, closing the gap with the US program.

The recent surge in interest in space exploration was evident at the launch site in the Chinese province of Hainan, where tens of thousands of tourists gathered to witness the event, causing long traffic jams in various viewing locations near the site.
