ISLAMABAD: The National Space Agency of Pakistan (SUPARCO) on Saturday announced the commencement of World Space Week 2025, the world’s largest annual space event, to be celebrated from 4–10 October across Pakistan and worldwide under the theme “Living in Space.”

The United Nations declared World Space Week in 1999 to commemorate two milestones in space history — the launch of Sputnik-1 on October 4, 1957, and the signing of the Outer Space Treaty on October 10, 1967. The annual observance highlights the role of space science and technology in shaping human progress.

As Pakistan’s national coordinator, SUPARCO has been leading the celebrations since 2005. In 2024, the country ranked first worldwide by hosting over 6,000 events, making it the most active participant globally.

For this year’s edition, SUPARCO has planned a diverse lineup of events aimed at students, teachers, and the general public. Activities include:

  • Teachers’ training workshops on building and launching water rockets in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar and Gilgit.
  • Space Camp 2025, featuring hands-on workshops and a model satellite design competition.
  • Nationwide outreach through “space vans” to engage students in remote areas.
  • Academic visits to SUPARCO facilities.
  • Competitions such as the Best Space School Award, Space Ambassador Contests for science societies, and creativity-based contests for the public.

SUPARCO said these activities are designed to spark interest in astronomy, satellite technology, remote sensing, and other space sciences, inspiring young Pakistanis to pursue careers in the field.

Calling on schools, universities and communities to participate, SUPARCO urged: “Join hands in celebrating the biggest space event on Earth — World Space Week 2025.”
