Pakistan moves closer to 5G launch as spectrum auction plan sent to cabinet
Pakistan is moving closer to the introduction of 5G technology as recommendations for the auction of 5G spectrum have been forwarded to the federal cabinet, sources in the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said.
According to the sources, the auction model and reserve prices for the spectrum will be finalised after formal approval by the cabinet, which is expected either in the next meeting or through a circulation summary. Once approval is granted, an Information Memorandum will be issued immediately.
The PTA plans to offer a total of 600 megahertz of spectrum across six bands. These include 2600 MHz (with 194 MHz of prime spectrum), 700 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz and 3500 MHz. Priority will be given to the auction of the 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz bands, with a target of selling more than 300 MHz of spectrum.
Sources said at least 100 MHz of spectrum is required for efficient 5G services, and keeping investment considerations in mind, reserve prices are likely to be set relatively low. Each band will have a separate base price.
The spectrum auction is expected to be conducted openly in the presence of the media. Companies will be given 40 to 45 days to participate after the issuance of the Information Memorandum. The PTA aims to complete the auction before February 15.

Three local mobile service providers are expected to take part in the bidding process, while foreign companies may also be allowed to participate, sources added.
Officials anticipate a significant improvement in internet connectivity, particularly in major urban centres. Commercial 5G services are planned to be launched in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and other large cities in 2026.
In the first year, authorities aim to raise average internet speeds from around 4 Mbps to 25 Mbps. Annual targets for the installation of new mobile towers and fibreisation of existing towers have also been set, which are expected to lead to a substantial boost in Pakistan’s digital infrastructure.
