KARACHI: The Karachi Traffic Police has announced a new traffic management plan mandating separate lanes for motorbikes, buses and rickshaws on Sharea Faisal, with fines to be imposed on violators.

The initiative was unveiled by DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah, who said the plan aims to introduce structured lane discipline on one of the city’s busiest arteries.

He said the system would initially be implemented on Sharea Faisal, where surveillance infrastructure is already in place.

A one-month awareness campaign will be launched before enforcement begins on June 1, allowing commuters time to adjust to the new rules.

Under the plan, motorbikes, buses, rickshaws and other light transport vehicles will be restricted to the two leftmost lanes, while the remaining lanes — depending on the stretch — will be reserved for faster-moving traffic such as cars and double-cabin vehicles.

Authorities said enforcement would be carried out through an existing network of cameras, which will issue e-tickets directly to violators.

Fines have been set at Rs2,500 for motorbikes and rickshaws, and Rs7,500 for buses.

Officials said the move is aimed at improving traffic flow and introducing lane discipline in the metropolis in a structured manner.
