Yangon: At least 55 people were killed and dozens injured in a powerful explosion in Myanmar’s Kaung Tat village, according to media reports and local sources.

The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), which is currently observing a ceasefire with Myanmar’s military, confirmed that fatalities had occurred but did not provide an official death toll.

According to reports by the BBC and local outlet Shwe Phee Myay News Agency, at least 55 people died in the blast, including 25 women and 30 men, while many others sustained injuries.

In a statement, the TNLA said the explosion was believed to have been caused by the accidental detonation of materials stored for use in mining operations. The group expressed condolences to the families of those killed and injured.

“The Palaung State Liberation Front/TNLA expresses its deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, were injured, and suffered damage as a result of the explosion,” the group said.

The blast occurred around noon local time on Sunday. The TNLA said an investigation had been launched to determine the exact cause of the incident and pledged that anyone found responsible would be held accountable.

The group also announced plans to provide relief assistance, medical care and rehabilitation support to affected families as soon as possible.

The full circumstances surrounding the explosion remain unclear, and authorities are continuing efforts to assess the extent of the damage and casualties.
