Keir Starmer announces resignation as UK prime minister
LONDON: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation, saying he is leaving office after steering the country through economic stabilisation and rebuilding his political party from what he described as a state of collapse.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer confirmed that he had informed King Charles of his decision earlier in the day, calling his oath as prime minister the most significant moment of his life.
He said that when he took over the leadership of the Labour Party six years ago, it was in a deeply weakened condition, both financially and organisationally.
“Six years ago, I took over the leadership of the Labour Party when it was effectively bankrupt,” Starmer said. “We rebuilt our party, and we restored our national economy. Under my leadership, Britain has progressed.”

Starmer said his resignation comes despite ongoing political pressures, and defended his record by arguing that major national reforms require time to take effect.
He said he had worked to stabilise the economy and strengthen the country’s international relationships during his time in office.
“I strengthened the economy within two years and reinforced our relationships with allies,” he said.
The outgoing prime minister added that he will continue in office until the Labour Party completes its internal leadership process and selects a successor.
